Inorganic Components in Fly Ash
The use of X-ray fluorescence spectrometry in the environmental and recycling fields is growing. This technique is used for the composition management of the major components of fly ash, including calcium oxide, silica, and alumina; chlorine concentration management in fly ash; and confirming the absence or presence of lead and other toxic heavy metals when fly ash is recycled for various applications. The X-ray Fluorescence Spectrometer (EDX) can make direct measurements on powders, without pretreatment. The qualitative and quantitative analysis results of fly ash, obtained using the FP method, are shown below. A 3g power sample was directly inserted into a powder-sample container with 5 µm polypropylene adhered to the base.
For quantitative calculations, it is assumed that all substances are oxides. The detection and quantitation of chlorine and trace quantities of heavy elements are easy.
X-ray Fluorescence Spectrometer (EDX)
This instrument irradiates the sample with X-rays and measures the energy of the generated fluorescent X-rays to determine the type and content of the elements comprising the sample. EDX permits the non-destructive elemental analysis of samples in solid, powder, liquid, disk, or wafer form and is used in a wide range of applications.
